In 1986, Miller's End, Kentucky has become the target of something wicked. Many fall victim to a malevolent presence as a lawman and a mourning father are hell bent on solving the mystery and saving their town.

Vusi Madlazi returns to the South African village he left as a young boy (he was organizing against apartheid, and left in fear of his life) to bury his father. He meets up with his brother Ernest, who tells him their other brother Stephen couldn't be contacted. Vusi goes to Johannesburg to find him, but at first can only find his neighbor/girlfriend, Karin, a stripper. Vusi proceeds to learn how conditions have changed since the end of apartheid, not always for the better for black men.

Ade and Femi are expatriate Nigerian brothers. Ade is a successful banker in London, while Femi, once a political dissident in his home country, has had to escape to South Africa, live in refugee tenements and work menial jobs. The brothers have not only been physically estranged, their relationship is riddled with unspoken betrayal, guilt and scorn, which they have carried since the early days of their youth. During a short visit to Johannesburg, Ade discovers that his brother has been missing for a week. He sets out to investigate Femi's mysterious disappearance, reconstructing the pieces of his everyday life and the cruel hardships he endured just to survive. A riot erupts while Ade is visiting Femi's former boss in one of the townships. Ade is forced to take shelter with the employer. The mounting violence outside seeps into their exchanges and, eventually, prompts an explosion of revelation.

Two sound artists play and listen into the large hole of the Garzweiler open-cast mine as a self-experiment. The camera observes the conflict at the hole, looks and listens into it. All attempts to alleviate or stop the wounding of the landscape seem fragile, helpless and perhaps even futile.

When Tae-young refuses to let drug lord Ma Gun-soo use his disco club as a place of business, Gun-soo injects him with drugs and sets him up to the police. Tae-young serves time for a crime he did not commit. After his release, Tae-young attacks Gun-soo's son Tae-ho. Gun-soo retaliates by attacking Joon-suk and In-hye. He tortures and kills Joon-suk. Having lost everything to Gun-soo and his men, Tae-young plans one final battle. He alerts the police to come at a specified moment and prepares for a fight to the finish.
